The History of Tetra
The story of Tetra Tea Tree bedding began in 1949 in West Pennant Hills, New South Wales. On the property stood a lonely Tea Tree, the only remainder of a forest of tress that were cleared years before. Tea Trees were regarded at that time as useless and when a new owner bought the property he too reached for the axe to remove the last tree standing; but he let it stand when he noticed what welcome shade its dense crown of dark green leaves gave. About Christmas it was in bloom and delicate flowers covered its foliage like a veil of old lace. It was a very old tree. The trunk measured two feet in diameter and its bark was an inch and a half thick. Big sections of bark had come off the tree and lay around the trunk. Pieces of the bark had flaked off. They were feathery light and had a silky texture. They seemed to be too good to be allowed to go to waste. The owner of the tree was fascinated by the layers of light, flaky bark and stood in front of the tree wondering what could be done with that. Rubbing a piece between his fingers he noticed little flakes were coming off and they floated in the air like feathers. The mental association of feathers as filling material gave him an idea. The seed of what was to become Tetra Tea Tree products was planted. It was in fact along way between the birth of the idea and the creation of the first Tetra products. A unique manufacturing process had to be developed. |
