The History of Tetra

The story of Tetra Tea Tree bedding began in 1949 in West Pennant Hills, New South Wales. On the property stood a lonely Tea Tree, the only remainder of a forest of tress that were cleared years before.

Tea Trees were regarded at that time as useless and when a new owner bought the property he too reached for the axe to remove the last tree standing; but he let it stand when he noticed what welcome shade its dense crown of dark green leaves gave. About Christmas it was in bloom and delicate flowers covered its foliage like a veil of old lace.

It was a very old tree. The trunk measured two feet in diameter and its bark was an inch and a half thick. Big sections of bark had come off the tree and lay around the trunk. Pieces of the bark had flaked off. They were feathery light and had a silky texture. They seemed to be too good to be allowed to go to waste.

The owner of the tree was fascinated by the layers of light, flaky bark and stood in front of the tree wondering what could be done with that. Rubbing a piece between his fingers he noticed little flakes were coming off and they floated in the air like feathers. The mental association of feathers as filling material gave him an idea. The seed of what was to become Tetra Tea Tree products was planted.

It was in fact along way between the birth of the idea and the creation of the first Tetra products. A unique manufacturing process had to be developed.

ProcessThe first step was gathering the bark so that it could be stripped within injurying the tree. A solution was found so that within 4 to 6 years the Tea Tree had re-grown its bark entirely.

The next step was to dry the bark so that the layers, some times up to 200 of them within less then a centimeter, would flake entirely. The flake layers also had to be broken up. Inteare fibre cords like sinews, they disintegrate into tiny needles and later turn into dust. Only the thin layers never pulverize so the fibre must be separated from the fluffly stuff. The dust which has been blown into the bark by gales must be eliminated.

ProcessA process to achieve all of this was developed and a state-of-the-art machine constructed. Techhnical help from the outside was hard to obtain because nothing like this had ever been made before. Many people said the idea of using bark as filling for pillows was impractable, that it couldn’t be done. However with persistence and a fair investment, a product was eventually made that provided fantastic comfort to those who tried it and was approved by the health authorities. It was given the name Tetra, which is the Greek word for Four, because of the four main product advantages identified in 1949;

  1. Tetra never grows mouldy, fungus does not grow on it.
  2. Tetra does not harbour germs, bacteria cannot live in it. The reason, established by a government labarotory, is its lack of nutrional value for fungi or germs.
  3. Tetra as a filling is cooler in summer and warm in winter.
  4. Tetra never lumps. It can be washed because there is a possibility of quick drying.
